Anyone who wants to return to Syria can inform us. From January 1 2026 the standard rates for return support apply.
The procedure consists of 4 steps:
1. Fill out the application form on our website.
Do this in one session. The form is available in Dutch, English, and Arabic. Select the desired language using the buttons at the top right. Ensure you have the following information at hand:
- Your full name and V-number
- Address, postal code, and city in the Netherlands
- Your email address and telephone number
2. We will check if all required information is present. You will receive a response from us within 5 working days.
3. Are you traveling as a family, an unaccompanied minor, or a single woman? Then an employee will contact you to discuss your options for return.
4. We will book your trip to Syria. The travel route depends on the possibilities. Travel is often via Jordan. How long it takes before you can depart depends on the number of applications we receive and whether you have a travel document.
Do you choose to leave for Syria voluntarily with our help? In that case, this means that you withdraw your asylum application or relinquish your residence permit. You surrender your residence documents and sign a declaration at Schiphol.
How to arrange a replacement travel document
Do you no longer have a valid passport, or has your passport expired? Then apply for a replacement travel document (also known as a ‘laissez-passer’).
Follow these steps to apply for a replacement travel document:
1. Make an appointment at the Syrian Embassy in Brussels or Bonn via the ‘Mofa Sy’ app. Ensure you have your national identity number at hand.
2. Go to the appointment at the embassy. Bring copies of your (identity) documents or show the documents on your phone. Also bring 1 passport photo and an international birth certificate for children born in the Netherlands. You can request an international birth certificate from the municipality.
In principle, you can pick up your ‘laissez-passer’ the same day.
3. Make a copy of the laissez-passer and send it to the DTenV employee handling your application.
Are you unable to pick up your travel document the same day because additional documents or information are required? In that case, the embassy will contact DTenV. Your contact person at DTenV sends the additional information to the embassy and collects the laissez-passer. Your contact person at DTenV will keep you informed of this.
